The general rule is that if you reach the point when you are not being able to read up close without stretching your arms past the limit, then you may need a simple pair of reading glasses. The reading glasses will magnify the material so that you can read it without straining your eyes.

There are some reading glasses however that will require a prescription. What this means is that you only need the glasses when you are reading and in some cases watching television. These glasses usually come in two styles. There are full frames, where the entire lens is made in the prescription. There are also half-eyes, these are the smaller lenses that contain the prescription in the lower half of the lens.

Reading glasses can be either custom-made or purchased ready-made. The ready made glasses are the ones that you will find at your local pharmacy or drugstore. The ready-made glasses started to become popular during the 1990's. Research has shown that three times as many glasses were purchased during this time then in the decade before. This was due to the fact that they were less expensive and didn't require a prescription.

There are some drawbacks to purchasing ready made reading glasses however. In most cases they are made in a one size fits all form. Unlike prescription glasses, the reading glasses cannot be adjusted when you buy them. You simply try them on and take them as they are. This means that you could end up buying glasses that are falling off your face when you are reading. If you do not buy a pair of glasses that suits your needs then you should end up having headaches and nausea. The glasses could cause more problems with you vision then you already have. In some cases people end up buying prescription glasses after all.

Article Tags: Vision, Reading Glasses, Prescription, Drawbacks

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/health-articles/types-of-reading-glasses-11006.html

Reading Glasses: A Great Way to Reverse the Time

Author: <a href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/rory-h.-hawkins/3600.htm" title="Rory H. These types of glasses are ideal for those who have to examine things closely for a considerable stretch of time. They are more functional too. They come with colorful frames and attractive suspension chains and as sleek magnifier pendant necklaces that adorn your neck. If you have to frequent in the outdoor, you can select tinted reading glasses with UV protection.

If you are going to buy ready-made reading glasses, ensure that the lenses are free of bubbles and waves. While there is no cure for age related macular degeneration (AMD), there are macular degeneration treatments available that can assist such patients in maximizing what sight they do have; telescopic glasses are possibly among the most effective, both in terms of cost and effectiveness.

In some ways, these remarkable devices – also known as bioptics - are similar to bifocal reading glasses. They essentially work the same way; patients utilize these macular degeneration devices by tilting their heads forward. These particular macular degeneration devices are different however in their construction. Unlike bifocal reading glasses, which integrate two different prescriptions into single lenses, telescopic glasses actually consist of miniature telescopes that sit atop the frames.

The marvelous aspect of telescopic glasses – also known as bioptics - is the fact that they can be adjusted in the same way as many full-sized telescopes. As low vision aids for the relief of macular degeneration symptoms, telescopic glasses can be adjusted for a variety of activities requiring far, mid-range and near vision.

In fact, some states actually allow those who cannot pass the eye test for driving to operate a motor vehicle as long as bioptics are used. While there are usually restrictions, the use of telescopic glasses can help the patient to regain some measure of independence. These low vision aids are of great help in seeing road signs and other objects on the highway.

Telescopic glasses are like regular glasses, and if you plan on driving with them, you’ll need an optometrist’s prescription. Even if you’re not planning to operate an automobile (and admittedly, this is not appropriate for everyone – or even very many – people with macular degeneration symptoms), the use of these remarkable low vision aids can greatly add to your quality of life.

With the use of bioptics, people who use such macular degeneration devices can once again enjoy watching television and motion pictures, engage in artistic pursuits such as sculpture and painting or music requiring reading, and engage in their favorite sports.

Of course, because macular degeneration symptoms affect one’s central vision and because different activities in life require different kinds of vision, there is no one single solution. Bioptics are only one part of a comprehensive solution that will most likely require several different types of macular degeneration devices. Only your optometrist can advise you as to which of these prosthetic devices can be of most good in helping your particular case.

As is the case for prescription bifocal reading glasses, you will need to be examined by and have a prescription from a qualified optometrist in order to make sure that bifocal reading glasses are right for you.

Article Tags: Bifocal Reading Glasses, Low Vision Aids, Macular Degeneration Symptoms, Macular Degeneration Devices, Telescopic Glasses

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/internet-articles/using-bifocal-reading-glasses-363189.html

Vision After 40 - Sneaky Ways to Hide Those Reading Glasses

By Suzanne Hughes

So you have decided against wearing reading glasses. You have noticed your near vision declining for years, but you are dead set against perching granny glasses on the end of your nose. As far as you are concerned, aging is hard enough; you certainly do not want to make yourself look older before your time. Luckily, there are many alternatives to conventional reading glasses.
A magnifying lens is a convenient answer to reading up close. This little gem is the size and shape of a credit card, so you can tuck it in a pocket or wallet for easy access. At a moment's notice, you will be reading away, without glasses.
Another great choice for making reading easier is the pendant magnifier. Wear it around your neck and make a statement. With a wide variety of styles and materials available (some trimmed with sparkly stones!), this is a beautiful, yet practical addition to your jewelry collection.
Lorgnettes are not just for the opera anymore. This choice affords you the ease and comfort of effortless reading, with the style and look of a trendy accessory. You can find frame in shiny metallics or bright plastics, mounted on handles or hung on chains.
As modern technology gets more advanced, some gadgets have gotten smaller. Cell phones, for instance, now weigh just a few ounces. With the benefit of a compact size comes the detriment of a harder-to-read display. Numbers and symbols are difficult to see on the tiny screens. Reading texts is next to impossible if you are presbyopic. But with a phone monocle, these problems are a thing of the past. This device fits over a phone display to magnify the data underneath. It fits both cell phones and cordless home phones, so if you are relaxing at home, you won't need to guess who is on the other end of the phone. You can just glance through the phone monocle and know for sure.
With all the stylish, yet functional choices in magnifying eyewear, maybe you will think being presbyopic is not so bad after all.
Suzanne Hughes believes reading glasses should be fun and fashionable. And she understands that sometimes an understated or more compact reading option is in order.
Visit her at http://www.ReadinStyle.com to see a full assortment of devices to help you read easier.
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Suzanne_Hughes

Do Reading Glasses Really Weaken Your Eyesight?

By Suzanne Hughes

Are you at the point that things up close are not as sharp as they used to be? So somebody suggested a pair of reading glasses to help out. That pair of +1.00 readers worked great for some time, then without warning they seem to fail, requiring you to get even a stronger pair of specs.

Is it possible that by wearing reading glasses your near vision deteriorated? Ready for the good news, you are only helping your self be wearing reading glasses. Correcting your vision does not make it worse, glasses simply bend light in a manner so it hits the back of your eye properly.

So when and why do you need reading glasses? If you are approaching 40, congratulations, you are also approaching presbyopia. Presbyopia is the medical term for loss of accommodative near vision. Basically, there is a lens inside your eye that has been doing all the focusing for you. The lens is elastic and has the ability to adjust shape and, much like a camera, focus your eye from far to near.

When you were a little kid, it was possible to focus on objects as close as a couple inches away from your eye. Try that now, go ahead and try to read this print closer and closer. Depending on your age, it may be blurry anywhere from a couple inches to almost a couple feet! Or perhaps you are already wearing reading glasses to help you see up close.

The reason you notice this is because of that focusing lens, inside your eye, that we mentioned earlier. There are three parts of the body that continue to grow throughout life: Your nose, your ears, and your crystalline lens. Your lens grows in layers, much like an onion. As it grows, your lens slowly loses its elasticity making it more difficult to focus up close. Because it is so gradual we really don’t notice it until we reach our 40’s and at that time, we reach for a pair of reading glasses.

What do reading glasses actually do? They simply magnify the image which adjusts the focal length. This allows you to see the fine details again while holding your reading material at a comfortable distance. By simply magnifying an image, it is not possible to weaken your eyesight. What many people notice is that at age 42, a pair of +1.00 readers may work great for the newspaper and dinner menus. They are happy with their new readers and not overly inconvenienced to pull them out occasionally. But then, after a few years, they seem to need them more and more. And all of a sudden that pair of +1.00 readers is being upgraded to +1.50 or +2.00.

This progression is very natural and has to do, again, with the lens inside your eye losing its accommodative ability. So what are we to do now that we need readers? That’s simple, have fun with them. Reading glasses are a fact of life today for most people over the age of 40. And the great news is that eyewear designers have made tons of fun and funky frames designed specifically for you and your reading glasses needs.

So accept the fact that you will read a lot easier with a great pair of reading glasses, and most important, realize that magnifying an image is perfectly healthy and only relaxes your eyes. Have fun with it, make sure your next pair of frames make you look and feel fabulous.

This article was provided by http://www.readinstyle.com, your supplier for optical quality designer reading glasses and accessories. You might not have been wearing readers at that point, but if you did, these glasses looked like someone took the time to personally place their artistic talent on your eyeglass frames.
In reality, there were a few stamped designs placed on a cheap pair of plastic frames. Yet they were in style. Well today, the available styles have caught up with the fashion savvy marketplace.
Practically everyone over the age of 45 needs some sort of additional reading correction. And the 45 year olds today are a lot younger at heart than their parents were at age 45. With this new generation have come innovative senses styles and fashions. This includes everything from shoes and tops to sunglasses and, of course, reading glasses.
The over 40 group today is not ashamed of the fact that a little extra reading correction is needed. They revel in it. With funky, fun colored reading glass frames, and gimmicky new devices we are constantly amazed at the latest reading novelty.
For example, a company called pocket peeper has a credit card sized magnifying lenses that slip right into your wallet. These cards come with flashy designs and some even have embedded rhinestones. Another great item that has been brought back in a great new way is the lorgnette, or reading glasses sans frame. These wonderful pieces are the perfect accessory for that trendy woman.
When it comes to actual reading glass frames, there are colors and designs galore to choose from. You can find more styles of reading glasses to choose from at an online boutique like http://www.readinstyle.com, than you can find shoes in your best girlfriends’ closet.
Frames are designed off styles made famous by characters of the generation, such as Clark Kent and other nostalgic concepts. Or even colors that match that shag green carpet you grew up playing on. Eye Bobs in particular has brought back some colors in a whole new manner that will make you smile and reminisce each and every time you put them on.
Reading glasses have truly become the latest fashion accessory. So what are you doing still wearing those “hand painted” plastic frames? Or cheap metal frames from the dollar store with the missing nose pad? Put your fashion foot forward and enjoy a real pair of reading glasses.
Suzanne Hughes is a fashion expert and buyer of designer reading glasses. You can see many of the great styles she has found at http://www.readinstyle.com
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Suzanne_Hughes

Print This Post

Should I Buy Reading Glasses Online?

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
Like Graying hair and crow's feet, loss of close-up vision is a part of getting old. For centuries, glasses have helped us age gracefully. Thirty years ago, we were required by law in the United States to see the eye doctor before purchasing reading glasses. Now, ready-to wear reading glasses can be purchased without a prescription at the local bookstore, pharmacy and even over the internet. However, just because you CAN purchase readers online, SHOULD you?

First, let's examine what over-the-counter readers are. They're lenses that magnify text and small close-up objects such as needles and thread. It is important to know that the right and left lenses of these readers have the exact same magnification, so it is only useful for people with symmetrical vision loss. +.50 power magnifies the least, for those in need of a tiny added boost, and the power goes up to +600 for those with more serious vision problems. Most people over 40 years old need in the range of +100 to +350 power. Ready-to-wear-readers are helpful, then, for people with normal close-range vision loss due to aging (presbyopia) where both eyes need the same power.

Reading glasses found in the drug store or online cannot correct astigmatism, distance problems (near-sightedness), asymmetrical vision loss, and other needs. In these cases, an eye doctor is necessary to determine the problem and prescription. Then the lenses have to be specially made. Often, people will correct their distance with contact lenses, then wear reading glasses over them to help them read.

If you're able to use over-the-counter reading glasses or not, everyone should see their eye doctor periodically to assess their vision as well as check for other problems, such as glaucoma, which can suggest broader systemic disease.

Keeping this in mind, if you think you can benefit from reading glasses, you can print an eye chart from the internet to help you determine your strength. Remember, the chart is only effective when printed and held 14" from the face.

Online reading glass stores, such as Debby Burk Optical, can offer huge benefits above other options. First, it can offer you tremendous savings over having readers custom made. Online reading glass stores usually have easy and generous return policies in case you purchase a strength or style that doesn't suit you. Other benefits are the huge selection of readers. There is a wide range available, much better than the local drug store. Whether you prefer classic, modern, full or half frame, metal, plastic, magnified sunglasses, tube readers, or folding glasses, the fashions can rival any runway show.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Farrell_Burk

Eyeglasses as Part Of Trend Mode

Various reason of people uses eyeglasses, however in the begining people applies eyeglasses is caused by resistance at x'self is because difficulty sees, or eye pain, etcetera. I reached for my low strength, over the counter reading glasses, but instead of getting relief, it created more problems. For one, the music, which was a little more than an arm's distance away, felt distorted and over-magnified. Also, looking down at the piano keys felt uncomfortable.
And so, an innovative new reading glass, developed just for the not-so-young musician, was born; Top-Bifocal Reading Glasses.
Working with various opticians, and Hirsch Optical Corp, as well as using my knowledge of neck strain (I am a chiropractor), the lenses were constructed so that the bifocal was placed in the top portion of the lens. This way, the musicians' upper visual field is magnified, which is where they need to look to see their sheet music. However, the lower portion of the lenses has no power, so looking close up at their hands and instruments is not uncomfortable.
Also, a chart was developed so users could figure out the best power for them. Normally, over the counter reading glasses are designed for close up reading, from about 14 to 20" away from the eyes. Piano music, however, is placed a little farther than this, which requires less magnification for intermediate vision.
The first thing most people look for when buying reading glasses -- is style. People want to look great, and reading glasses are a terrific accessory for that since others look you in the eyes first.

But there's more than fashion to consider when choosing reading glasses. Consider the quality of optics and the materials from which they're made.

Most eye care professionals recommend aspheric lenses. In 1990 aspheric lenses became one of the most popular and useful categories of lens. Conventional lenses have a front surface that's spherical, shaped like the surface of a ball. But aspheric lenses have a more complex front surface that gradually change it's curve from the center of the lens all the way out to the edge.

A basic principle of optics dictates that a slight distortion is created when wearers look away from the center of a conventional lens when the gaze is directed to the left or right, above or below. Aspheric lens designs eliminate those distortions. That's because, as the eye travels away from the center of the lens, the front curve changes, keeping optics crisp and clear.

Aspheric lenses are a lot like thin prescription high-index lenses. In a completely different way than high index, aspheric lenses also end up thinner than conventional lenses, even when made from conventional plastic. Aspheric lenses make your eyes look better to others, too. There's less "minification" of the eyes.

Another lens quality to be aware of is scratch resistance. Better reading glasses have scratch resistant lenses. Scratches on your lenses not only affect your vision, but can also affect the way you look.

A lot of people enjoy adjustable nose pads and spring temple hinges for comfort and fit.

Most popularly priced reading glasses have PVC (or ordinary plastic) lenses. There's nothing wrong with that but they don't provide the clearest vision possible. The best lenses for reading glasses are made of materials called C-39 or polycarbonate. They render the clearest vision. Unfortunately, they're more expensive than plastic.

Other items of which to be aware when buying reading glasses include the material from which the frames are constructed: Ordinary plastic is most affordable but lacks durability. Consider laminated acetate or Zyl.
Nickel-free Monel (hypo-allergenic) and stainless steel and are two of the best metals for the construction of reading glasses. They're durable and maintain their good looks as do laminated acetate and Zyl.If you're like most people, you'll want to make sure the reading
<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="PlaceName"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="PlaceType"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype>
glasses you select look great on your face. There is another option that allows you to wear reading glasses, but keep it low key so others may not even notice you have them on. Clear plastic reading glasses have an invisible look to them. For those not happy with the idea of wearing reading glasses this may be their answer.
The idea of plastic frames can turn some people off. In the past plastic frames were quite heavy as compared to metal frames. However, the technology today has allowed for the creation of lightweight plastics, like zyl or TR-90 memory flex plastic. TR-90 memory plastic also offers an added benefit of being flexible that makes frames much more durable. Memory plastics have the ability to form to the wearers face to provide a comfortable, custom fit with every wear. Clear plastic reading glasses do not have to be avoided simply because they are plastic. Just look for the special materials available that make them very comfortable to wear.
Clear plastic reading glasses offer a clear frame as the name suggests. The plastic frames are good for stronger prescriptions because they offer more coverage for the edges of these thicker lenses. To ensure a light feel
combine the lightweight plastic material frames with lightweight lenses available from your doctor. Clear plastic reading glasses are available in full size or half size as well as many different styles. The invisible allure of clear plastic reading glasses is what keeps them a popular choice for new wearers.
Choosing reading glasses can be difficult especially when you do not want them in the first place. Clear plastic reading glasses offer a lightweight, invisible option for people not wanting to draw attention to the fact that they are wearing them.
Print This Post

Are Reading Glasses Over Contact Lenses Really Necessary?

By Steve Cogger

It is not at all uncommon that people who wear contact lenses eventually find the need to add a pair of reading glasses to their visual toolbox. So why is it that, if you are wearing contact lenses do you still require a pair of glasses? And, are they always necessary, or is it possible to get away with just wearing your contacts?
Depending on your necessary vision correction, your contacts have probably been prescribed for optimal distance correction; which is what most people need prior to the age of about 40. After or around the age of 40, presbyopia sets in and another correction for reading is required.
So as a 40 something contact lens wearer, what exactly are your options? Let's start with the simplest. If you are happy with your distance vision and you are happy to flaunt some of the stylish reading glasses available today, you can keep your lenses the same and simply slip on a pair of readers when necessary. You will want to be sure to remember to bring them when you go out to dinner, as dim lights make everything more challenging to see.
Another alternative is to visit your friendly contact lens fitter and see if they can upgrade your lens system into a multifocal or monovision design. Fitting multifocal contact lenses is a bit more time consuming than your average distance vision fitting, however if you are dealing with an experienced lens specialist, you are certainly going to be pleased with the end results.
Multifocal contact lenses come in many varieties, from soft disposable lenses to gas permeable designs. And most recently, the hybrid multifocal contact lens that promises the comfort of soft contacts with the superior vision of gas permeable lenses.
Monovision, or modified monovision, allows your contact lens practitioner to evaluate and adjust your lenses based on eye dominance and visual demands. As stated earlier, mulitfocal lenses are a fantastic option when in the hands of a qualified lens fitter.
With all the options available, you can see that the need for reading glasses does not mean you have to wear eyeglasses around your neck for the rest of your life. Multifocal lenses can drastically reduce the need for them. I encourage you evaluate a pair of multifocal lenses; give them a week or two to get used to the vision. And if you still like to find a pair of quality reading glasses, enjoy and have fun with them.
Print This Post
